Nigeria has been ranked third in Africa in the World Giving Index 2024, a global measure of generosity by the Charity Aid Foundation (CAF). The ranking highlights the country’s strong culture of giving, placing it fifth globally and reaffirming its position as one of the most charitable nations in Africa.
Kenya topped the list in Africa and secured the second spot globally, while The Gambia and Liberia ranked second and fourth in Africa, respectively.
The CAF report praised Kenya’s high ranking, noting that despite economic challenges, including rising costs of living and unemployment, the Kenyan people have maintained a strong spirit of generosity. The report attributed this to the “utu” spirit, which represents humanity and togetherness.
Globally, the World Giving Index revealed that 4.2 billion people worldwide contributed through donations, volunteering, or helping strangers in 2022, representing 72% of the world’s adult population.
