The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, one of its high-profile members, over allegations of anti-party activities. The decision was made by the ward executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1, Kogi State, following a review of a disciplinary committee’s report on Melaye’s recent conduct.
According to a letter obtained by Punch Online on Friday, Melaye’s actions were deemed harmful to the unity and interests of the PDP, leading to his suspension. The letter stated that Melaye’s conduct had brought “embarrassment and disrepute” to the party, rendering his continued membership untenable. The ward executive committee invoked Article 59(1) of the PDP constitution, which allows ward party exco to discipline erring members.
The resolution read, “Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party and his continued membership is no longer tenable. Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately.”
Melaye’s suspension is the latest in a series of similar actions taken by the PDP against members accused of anti-party activities. In August 2024, Osun PDP chieftain Peter Babalola was suspended for failing to attend party meetings for two years and engaging in activities deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.
The PDP has also taken disciplinary measures against former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, Senator Gabriel Suswam, and others in Benue over similar allegations of misconduct and anti-party behaviour.
While the details surrounding Melaye’s suspension are still emerging, the move reflects the PDP’s ongoing efforts to enforce discipline within its ranks. Further information is expected as the situation develops.
