COVID-19 Lockdown: Ghana To Get Free Water Supply & Uninterrupted Power

The development was announced by the country’s President Nana Akufo-Addo in his 5th broadcast to the nation since the onset of the pandemic.

He declared that the government will cover the water bills of its citizens for April, May and June.

President Akufo-Addo had put some parts of the nation under lockdown on March 30 to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The areas include Accra and Kumasi.

The new initiative comes following complaints by indigenes of some communities that they lacked water to wash their hands as a preventive measure against the spread of COVID-19.

The nation’s leader in his speech said:

“The Ghana Water Company Ltd and the Electricity Company of Ghana have been directed to ensure the stable supply of water and electricity during this period. In addition, there will be no disconnection of supply.

Furthermore, the government will absorb the water bills for all Ghanaians for the next three months that is April, May and June. All water tankers, publicly and privately-owned, are also going to be mobilised to ensure the supply of water to all vulnerable communities.”

He also said that the health workers on the frontlines would get 50% additional salary allowance and that their salaries would not be taxed for the next 3 months.
