BAFTAs: ‘Joker’ Star Joaquin Phoenix Criticizes Lack Of Diversity

Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Todd Phillip’s Joker was recognized at the BAFTA Awards during the weekend.

Phoenix’s portrayal of the deranged Arthur Fleck in the DC film earned him rave reviews and got him the BAFTA Award for his memorable performance.

As a result of its lack of diversity in the nominees this year, the BAFTAs got a lot of backlashes as most people were unhappy that the acting nominees were all white and women weren’t included in the list of directors.

Others also took issues with actress Margot Robbie being nominated twice in one category.

While giving a speech as he received the award, Phoenix spoke on the controversial lack of diversity and what needs to be put in place to stop it.

I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here. I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry, and in ways that we benefit from.

… We have to do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism. I think it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it. So that’s on us.Joaquin Phoenix

BAFTA had responded to the backlash shortly after the list of nominees was released, stating their disappointment and sharing that there would be an internal investigation.
