David Cronenberg is known for making controversial horror movies filled with gory details

The filmmaker is one of the main originators of what is commonly known as the body horror genre (his movies explore visceral bodily transformations, infection, technology, and the merging of the psychological with the physical).

Cronenberg, who revealed that he was almost a biochemist, stated that on a scientific level, Coronavirus is ‘great stuff.’

It’s a mutation. On a scientific level, this is great stuff. It’s not scary. Socially, it’s scary. But if you’re a science geek, this is just business as usual on planet Earth.

I came this close to becoming a biochemist. For me, that was the inspiration. It didn’t have to do with fear of disease or fear of contamination, although I know it can be seen that way.

Cronenberg’s films have divided critics and audiences alike as his gory depictions have often sparked controversies. His films, however, have won him numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
