American singer Taylor Swift has called on the politicians of Tennessee to do away with statues that she says symbolize “hideous” patterns of racism.
The artist made the call via her Instagram account on Friday, June 12, 2020, asking the Capitol Commission and the Tennessee Historical Commission to consider the implication of how hurtful to continue fighting those monuments, some of which commemorate the work of the Ku Klux Klan and Confederate soldiers.
Part of her post reads:
As a Tennessean, it makes me sick that there are monuments standing in our state that celebrate racist historical figures who did evil things.
Edward Cormack and Nathan Bedford Forrest were DESPICABLE figures in our state history and should be treated as such.”
Taylor stated that the statue of Cormack who she called a ‘white supremacist newspaper editor’ should not be replaced at the state Capitol.
“Replacing his statue is a waste of state funds and a waste of an opportunity to do the right thing“, she said.
