It’s official! Disney is really making a live-action Hercules movie, and the Russo Brothers will be producing.
OduNews.com had earlier reported that there were rumors about a live-action film, with the possibility of either Jon Favreau or the Russos directing.
Well, now the Mouse House has confirmed that a Hercules live-action movie is happening, continuing Disney‘s recent efforts revisiting its classic animated movies.
The new report reveals that the Russos are set to produce, with a script from Dave Callaham.
Callaham wrote scripts for movies like The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (currently in production).
Going by their résumé, the Russos are very competent when it comes to big budget movies such as this. Their wonderful work with Avengers: Endgame is a testament of that fact.
Hercules had a voice cast that included Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, and James Woods. It was a musical that had a lot of epic action with colossal destruction. Hopefully, that will be seen as well in the live-action remake.
Also, fans have been clamoring for DeVito (who provided the voice of the Satyr Philoctetes) to reprise the role. That is obviously a great idea as the diminutive star was phenomenal in the original film.
Disney will also be looking for an actor to play the titular character. Someone with an imposing physique and above average acting skills would do, and a good choice could be The Umbrella Academy‘s Tom Hopper.
Hopper has the required height to portray the son of Zeus (he is six foot five inches tall), and even his good looks could make him pass for a Greek demi-god.
The character of Hercules was last portrayed on the big screen by Dwayne Johnson (another physically imposing star, with a height of 6 foot 4 inches) in Brett Ratner‘s unique take on the Greek hero in the 2014 film Hercules.
