Two men are in the hospital receiving treatment for gunshot wounds after being shot for failing to comply with the restrictions on transport to check the spread of the coronavirus in Uganda.
The Ugandan police made the disclosure as the President of the nation Yoweri Museveni has called on the citizens to stay at home.
Places of worship and entertainment, and some agricultural markets have been closed for a month. People have also been banned from using public transport, with directives to drivers to make sure that there are not more than three persons to a car, or one on a private motorbike.
Uganda metropolitan police spokesman Patrick Onyango made the following statement:
“Police officers on duty to enforce a presidential directive stopped two men on motorbike in Mukono (near Kampala) On Thursday.
They attacked one of the officers, he fired the warning shot in the air but they charged him and he shot one of them in the leg, and another in the stomach.
Onyango said that the men had said that they were not aware of the directive banning public transport and private motorbikes carrying more than one person.
Uganda has had 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (majority of them revealed to be travelers who returned from Dubai).
