COVID-19 Lockdown: Youth Shot By Police In Delta During Peaceful Protest

Trigger-happy policemen disrupted a peaceful protest staged by the women in Sapele, Delta State after a young man was shot on the buttocks.

The unfortunate incident took place on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, when the women took to the streets to show their disapproval of the extension of the lockdown by the state

Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to check the spread of the coronavirus.

Sahara Reporters disclosed that the policemen, in a bid to disperse the crowd, shot randomly, leading to one of the bullets finding its way to the backside of a youth.

One of the protesters who spoke to a reporter said that the demonstration was going on peacefully before the arrival of the police.

He revealed that residents of the community were in panic due to the presence of armed security personnel who continue to patrol the area to contain the situation.

His words:

“Our protest was going on peacefully, we didn’t carry arms not even a cutlass.
But as usual, when the policemen arrived the scene, they began to use force on us.

“But because we knew we had not committed any offence by protesting for our rights, we continued.

“As we progressed, the police started shooting sporadically and along the line one of us was shot on the buttocks by a policeman.

The whole place became tensed while we quickly rushed the victim to a hospital for treatment.

“Everyone is afraid at the moment because we don’t know what can happen next in Sapele.”
