There have been several calls for the resignation of Cummings for allegedly breaching the lockdown rules imposed by the government.

Announcing his decision to resign through a statement seen by odunews.com, Mr. Ross said he could not justify why Cummings Cummings remaining in post to his constituents.

“I have constituents who didn’t get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn’t visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government,” he said in the statement announcing his departure.

“I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior advisor to the government was right.”

He added that Cummings’ interpretation of government rules was “not shared by the vast majority of people”.

Cummings had defended his trip to Durham in north-east England on March 31, and a subsequent shorter drive for what he said was to test his eyesight, as a “reasonable” move in order to seek childcare for his four-year-old son when he and his wife feared being very ill with coronavirus.
