Renowned car brand Toyota is planning to build a city that will contain about 2,000 people and where autonomous vehicles, robots, and smart technology will be tested.

The ‘City of the Future’ will break new grounds and execution of the plan will start next year in the foothills of Mount Fuji, 60 miles from Tokyo, Japan.

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda made the announcement while unveiling the plans at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Toyoda called the city a “living laboratory” that will give scientists and engineers the opportunity to test emerging technology in a real-life environment.

With people buildings and vehicles all connected and communicating with each other through data and sensors, we will be able to test AI technology, in both the virtual and the physical world, maximizing its potential. The project will be situated in a 175-acre expanse of land previously home to a Toyota factory and will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels mounted on rooftops.

The cars permitted in the city will be only those that are fully automated and have zero-emission. Additionally, a fleet of self-driving cars called Toyota e-Palettes will be used for delivery and retail purposes.
