Blackout Looms As Electricity Workers Begin Nationwide Strike

Nationwide blackout is imminent as workers in the nation’s Power sector early this morning locked up Power Distribution Companies, DISCOs, and Power Generation companies, GENCOs, across the country and began a nationwide strike over unresolved Labour issues.

The industrial action is declared under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).

Odunews.com gathered that the aggrieved workers have taken over EKO, Ikeja, Jos DISCOs, Oshogbo and other power distribution and generation companies.

Details of the industrial action coordinated by the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, will come later.

However, recall that the union had last month threatened to begin a nationwide industrial action over pending labour issues, after issuing the federal government, Distribution Companies of Nigeria, DISCOs, and Generation Companies in Nigeria, GENCOs a 21-day ultimatum to address its demands or face strike.

Some of the issues in contention include unpaid benefits to over 2000 disengaged staff of the defunct Power Holding Company, PHCN, since 2013; underpayment of over 50,000 ex-PHCN staff; refusal of some DISCOs to remit deducted contributory pension fund to workers’ Pension Fund Administrators, PFAs; payment of half salaries to workers by DISCOs, among other perceived unfair Labour practices.
