Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele has purchased the N100 million presidential nomination form of the All Progressives Congress.
Mr Emefiele’s nomination form was picked up on Friday following Ondo politician Ajayi Boroffice in series, according to people familiar with the development.
The development all but confirms Mr Emefiele’s readiness to contest the 2023 presidential race, and puts to rest speculation about whether or not he would join partisan politics while leading the nation’s central bank.
Emefiele’s decision to run for the office of the president in 2023 follows months of speculations regarding political aspirations of the Agbor, Delta State-born former Managing Director of Zenith Bank.
Emefiele had, in response to the move to vie for Nigeria’s number one office, asked speculators not to draw him in, as he would rather focus on fixing Nigeria’s monetary policies and aligning them with Federal Government’s fiscal policies.
He is the first central bank governor to join active politics and seek an elective position while in office.
