The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP in Lagos state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has made a bold statement regarding his plans to tackle the issue of touts and thuggery under the so-called ‘Agbero’ system in the state. The Agbero system, which has been a long-standing problem in the state, has created many bottlenecks and safety hazards over time.
During the Platform debate organized for governorship candidates in the state on Sunday, Rhodes-Vivour was vocal about his plans to address this issue. He stated that one of the main focus of his administration would be to improve road safety in Lagos state and to eliminate the Agbero system which has been a major contributor to the safety hazards.
Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the need to train road enforcement agents and to set clear policies that would not tolerate the Agbero system. He added that these policies can only be enforced when the system is running smoothly. To this end, his administration plans to introduce digital surveillance across the state to ensure that enforcement officers are held accountable with evidence.
The governorship candidate also highlighted the importance of the rail transportation system currently being built in the state and emphasized the need for it to take into consideration the movement of cargoes. He noted that the current practice of moving containers by road is damaging the roads and leading to accidents.
Rhodes-Vivour’s plans were met with support from other governorship candidates who participated in the debate, including Olufunso Doherty of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Abdul-Azeez Adediran of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The people of Lagos state are eager to see how these plans will be implemented and the positive impact they will have on the state.
