A tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near OPIC on Sunday has left at least seven people dead and 14 others injured. Mrs. Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident to the press in Abeokuta.
According to Okpe, the accident occurred at 10:45 am on Sunday and was caused by excessive speeding and brake failure, resulting in a loss of control. The vehicle reportedly struck a road divider, somersaulted, and burst into flames.
The FRSC spokesperson revealed that 22 people were involved in the accident, including seven men, eight women, four male children, and three female children. Among the injured were four men, five women, two male children, and three female children.
The seven fatalities included two men, three women, and two children. The vehicle involved in the accident was a Mazda bus with the registration number BDG 993 YG.
Okpe stated that the injured victims were taken to the Lagos State Accident Emergency Center in Ojota, while the deceased were transported to the Olabisi Onabajo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Morgue in Sagamu.
Expressing condolences to the victims’ families, Okpe advised motorists to avoid speeding and to perform routine vehicle checks for proper maintenance and timely replacement of any defects.
