The police operatives had on Tuesday stormed the residence of Seun Kuti and ransacked it in search of evidence to nail the Afrobeat singer.

It was learnt that the officers took the musician along when they went to his house and seized his wife’s mobile phone.

“The police came with him to search his house and seized his wife’s phone.

“They’re are looking for evidence to charge him with a different crime,” a source had said on Tuesday.

Nigerians had condemned the police for not only invading Seun’s residence but for also forcefully taking away his wife’s phone during the operation.

But reacting to the criticisms, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday morning said that the police invaded Seun’s home because they stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The police spokesperson said, “In the course of our investigation, we stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven/disproved beyond reasonable doubt.

“We, therefore, applied for and duly got a search warrant from the court, which we have executed. Investigation continues.

“No law restricts the police to investigating only the initial crime. World over, Police Departments stumble on other crimes while investigating an initial crime and we are duty bound to investigate them in line with our mandate of detecting and investigating crimes.”
