The political landscape of Lagos state was once again energized when its former governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, met with President Bola Tinubu at a reception event hosted by current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in honor of the President. The event signifies Ambode’s reemergence into the realm of frontline politics after a four-year hiatus since leaving his gubernatorial role.
“Welcome back, Akin! It’s wonderful to see you,” President Tinubu expressed, acknowledging Ambode’s presence during his first visit to the Lagos state House since his departure from office.
The celebration was intended to welcome President Tinubu back to the state after his first visit since becoming the President of Nigeria and following a week-long international trip. The President’s arrival during the Sallah break brought about a spark of enthusiasm in the Lagos community.
Prior rumors of a rift between the incumbent Governor Sanwo-Olu and his predecessor, Ambode, concerning the latter’s unceremonious exit from office and denied second term, were somewhat mitigated when Sanwo-Olu made a courtesy visit to Ambode on his birthday, offering goodwill gestures.
The event was graced by a multitude of political and societal figures, including Deputy Governor, Dr Femi Hamzat; Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abass; and Nigeria Governor’s Forum Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, among others.
In a moving address, President Tinubu emphasized the need for collaboration across party lines to restore Nigeria’s promise for future generations. Expressing his gratitude for the support received during the elections, he stated, “This is a challenging time for us all, and we must strive to change it for the better. I’m here today to express my gratitude.”
Tinubu pledged to collaborate with governors and Nigerians at large to reengineer the nation’s fiscal system and economy, practicing true federalism and implementing policies to stem the drain on the nation’s resources.
He added, “We have to make Nigeria work again. We will see rewards in this country; we will prosper for the sake of our children and Nigeria’s future.”
Earlier, the President had also made visits to The Awujale of Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III.
