President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a nationwide broadcast to commemorate 2023 Democracy Day, appealed to Nigerians to remain resolute despite the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy. He emphasized that this difficult decision was necessary to prevent Nigeria from descending into further crisis.
Addressing the nation in Abuja, President Tinubu acknowledged that the removal of the subsidy would increase the hardships faced by Nigerians. However, he assured the populace of significant investments in transportation, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and other vital sectors.
The president pledged that his administration would be guided by the principles championed by MKO Abiola, which prioritize the welfare of the people over the personal interests of the ruling class. He emphasized the need for a government that enables citizens to find personal fulfillment and happiness.
President Tinubu stated, “In my inauguration address on May 29, I acted upon the decision made by my predecessor to eliminate the burden of fuel subsidy and redirect the much-needed resources for the collective benefit of all, rather than a few wealthy individuals.”
He acknowledged the additional burden this decision would place on the masses, acknowledging their pain. However, he asserted that this sacrifice was necessary to save the country from dire circumstances and to free up resources from the grip of unpatriotic elements.
The president assured Nigerians that their sacrifice would not be in vain. His administration would repay their trust and belief by making substantial investments in transportation infrastructure, education, reliable power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities. These efforts aim to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
President Tinubu emphasized that the democracy MKO Abiola sacrificed his life for promotes the welfare of the people and ensures personal fulfillment and happiness. He called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to strengthening this form of government, which has been the guiding light of the nation for the past 24 years.
He urged elected officials at all levels of government to rededicate themselves to selfless service and the delivery of concrete democracy dividends in line with their electoral promises. President Tinubu reiterated his commitment, as well as that of his administration, to diligently fulfill every aspect of their electoral pact with the people, as outlined in the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
As Nigeria faces the challenges brought about by the subsidy removal, President Tinubu appealed to the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people, assuring them that their sacrifices would pave the way for a better and stronger Nigeria in the long run.
