In a tragic incident on Saturday, an undergraduate student of the University of Lagos, identified as Adekunle, was shot and killed by armed robbers at the Harvey Road junction in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
According to PUNCH Metro, Adekunle and his fellow student, Opeyemi, boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to the University of Lagos (UNILAG). While inside the vehicle, a man hanging at the back of the bus snatched Opeyemi’s iPhone 7 Plus.
Disturbed by the incident, Opeyemi raised an alarm, prompting Adekunle to pursue the robber who had jumped off the bus to escape. As Adekunle closed in on the suspect, one of the robbers, believed to be an accomplice of the fleeing thief, suddenly appeared and shot the 23-year-old student.
An eyewitness, speaking on the condition of anonymity for security reasons, disclosed that the accomplice shot Adekunle at close range in the left side of his head, resulting in his immediate death.
The incident occurred on June 3 at approximately 9 p.m. At the crime scene, Adekunle’s lifeless body, dressed in black attire, could be seen lying on the ground.
Subsequently, the police arrived at the scene and transported Adekunle’s body to the morgue of the Mainland Hospital.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that the command had launched an investigation to apprehend the suspects involved in the attack. He added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for a thorough investigation.
The spokesperson for the University of Lagos, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, declined to comment on the incident over the phone. Instead, she advised making a formal request through email or visiting the university to speak with the Dean of Students Affairs.
