In a decisive move aimed at enhancing public safety and curbing illegal firearm proliferation in Nigeria, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the formation of a special committee tasked with reviewing the nation’s firearms licensing and regulations.
This development comes as part of a broader effort to ensure strict compliance with the Firearms Act and other relevant laws governing firearms possession and use.
In an official statement released on Monday, Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi outlined the key objectives of this critical initiative. Acting IGP Egbetokun has taken a firm stance against unauthorized possession of arms and light weapons, warning that such actions will not be tolerated.
He directed State Commissioners of Police and Supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to take decisive action against illegal activities related to firearms, including fabrication, sale, possession, and usage of prohibited firearms.
The statement reads, “Similarly, in furtherance of his zeal to tackle all forms of insecurity in the country, the IGP has issued a stern warning to all individuals involved in the wrongful possession of arms and light weapons. He reiterated that illegal proliferation of firearms and light weapons poses a significant threat to the peace and stability of our nation.”
“In light of this, the Nigeria Police Force is resolutely determined to combat the illegal fabrication, sales, possession, and use of arms.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized that the possession of firearms without the appropriate license is not only a violation of the law but also a grave danger to society.
With this in mind, Acting IGP Egbetokun has called upon all Nigerians to report any suspicious activities related to firearms to their nearest police stations, urging citizens to play an active role in maintaining the safety and security of their communities.
