In a bid to put to rest recent speculations of an assassination attempt on his life, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State addressed the public in a press conference held.
Governor Bello vehemently denied claims of an attack, characterizing the incident as a mere misunderstanding.
The incident in question reportedly occurred while the Governor was en route to an official engagement in the capital city, Abuja. Sunday brought forth reports of a purported assassination attempt on his life, leading to widespread concern and a frenzy of media coverage.
However, Governor Bello, with an air of confidence, debunked these reports during the press conference. He explained that the situation was, in fact, a minor dispute between his personal security team and the military personnel responsible for safeguarding the road. The Governor emphasized that there had been no attempt whatsoever on his life.
The cause of the altercation, as outlined by Governor Bello, stemmed from a minor fracas involving members of the Nigerian Police Force, who were part of his security convoy, and a military unit assigned to oversee the highways.
He clarified that both groups were acting within their respective lawful security duties, and the dispute was resolved without further incident.
Governor Bello took a moment to commend the various security agencies for their collaborative efforts in enhancing the security of lives and property in Kogi State. Nevertheless, he expressed the need for the high command of these agencies to investigate any overzealous or unprofessional behavior displayed by their personnel during the incident, and to apply appropriate sanctions if necessary.
With an eye toward the 2023 governorship elections scheduled for November 11, Governor Bello urged the citizens of Kogi State to remain united and resist any efforts by political opportunists to exploit the incident for their gain.
He assured the state’s residents of both his safety and the sufficiency of security arrangements to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully, freely, and fairly.
In light of the Governor’s strong stance and reassurances, Kogi State is likely to refocus its attention on the democratic process as it approaches the significant 2023 governorship elections.
