In a candid and exclusive interview on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Nigerian music sensation Shallipopi has left fans and the music industry astir with a startling revelation – he has a treasure trove of over 1000 unreleased songs.
The artist, who gained fame with his chart-topping single ‘Elon Musk,’ opened up about his prolific songwriting journey and a recent creative experiment that’s been the talk of the town.
During the podcast episode, Shallipopi delved into the rationale behind infusing nursery rhymes into his latest single, ‘Oscroh.’ He explained that this daring move was a deliberate endeavor to test the waters and gauge the public’s reception.
“Yes now, I said I should test it. Do you know why? I have more than 1000 songs that I have not dropped, then I said if I dropped this, would people stream it? What I know is that some people will accept, some people will not accept,” Shallipopi remarked.
The singer revealed his inspiration for the experiment came from an unlikely source. “I took my phone, searched on Google for the most streamed video on earth, and I saw ‘Baby Shark.’ The most streamed video on earth is nursery rhymes, the second is ‘Despacito,’ I cannot speak Spanish, the third is ‘Johnny Johnny; Yes Papa,’ nursery rhymes, so so I say make I experiment small.”
Despite initial complaints about the incorporation of nursery rhymes into ‘Oscroh,’ Shallipopi achieved his goal of grabbing attention and racking up streams.
“A lot of people are complaining, but I already got what I want. The clout is already there, the stream is already there,” he confidently stated. “You do not have to like my song; there are other artists. That’s why it’s not only me who’s the only artist on Earth.”
