Armed assailants launched an assault on a police checkpoint positioned along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway on Thursday, leading to a police patrol vehicle being set on fire.
This occurrence took place near Ishieke junction, on the fringes of the city of Abakaliki.
Local reports suggest that the attackers resulted in the death of one police officer and the kidnapping of another, although these claims remain unconfirmed at the time this article was prepared.
The Ebonyi Police Command’s spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, acknowledged the incident.
Nevertheless, he expressed uncertainty regarding the fatalities or the potential abduction of police personnel, indicating that initial reports from the location were incomplete.
“There was an incident this morning, but I’m in the process of gathering more information. At this juncture, there’s not much I can confirm. I need to ensure my information is accurate. I’ve been informed of an assault at that location, but I lack further details,” he explained.
This event occurs just three weeks following a separate violent encounter at the hilltop junction checkpoint, which resulted in the loss of four police officers and two civilians.
