Ajibola Afonja, the former Minister of Labour and Chairman of First Bank Nigeria, passed away at the age of 82. The Oyo-born Prince died on Sunday night at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Afonja, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, was known for his significant contributions to the banking and industrial sectors. He attended Kingston University in the UK, graduating with a degree in Accounting in 1970. His early career included working with the UK-based construction firm John Mowlem & Co, where he held various positions before returning to Nigeria in 1974.
Afonja’s illustrious career saw him serve as Chairman of First Bank Nigeria and several other companies, including Integrated Dimensional Systems. He was also appointed as Minister of Labour under the interim government of Earnest Shonekan.
In a heartfelt tribute, Taiwo Adebayo, Chairman of the Oyo Global Forum, praised Afonja’s pioneering efforts and his lasting impact on the Oyo community. “His legacy of generosity and open-heartedness touched countless lives, and his presence will be profoundly missed,” Adebayo wrote. Afonja was affectionately known as “Daddy IDS,” a nod to his manufacturing company, and he remained dedicated to transformative business visions for Nigeria’s economy until his last month.
The Oyo Global Forum extended its deepest condolences to Afonja’s family, the Oyo community, and his friends and associates worldwide. “His absence leaves a void that will be difficult to fill, but his spirit of generosity and leadership will continue to inspire us,” the group stated.
Ajibola Afonja’s contributions and leadership have left an indelible mark, and his memory will be honored through the continuation of his values and service.
