In a historic decision, President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Anthem Bill into law. This bill, recently approved by the National Assembly, brings back Nigeria’s original national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was first adopted when the country gained independence in 1960.
This anthem was replaced by the military in 1978. After 46 years, the old anthem will now replace the current one, “Arise, O Compatriots,” signaling a return to Nigeria’s roots.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the President’s approval during a joint session of both houses of the National Assembly. This session was part of the celebrations marking 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urged lawmakers and visitors waiting for President Tinubu’s arrival to download the old national anthem, which has now been reinstated.
