The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the death of a miner and 30 others, including site manager Alh. Ibrahim Ishaku, who are trapped at a mining site in Galkogo, Shiroro local government area, following a mining pit collapse.
The incident occurred on Monday, and six people were rescued with severe injuries. NSEMA, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Hussaini Ibrahim, attributed the cause of the collapse to rainfall, which softened the soil.
The PRO disclosed that the mine site belongs to a company named African Minerals and Logistics Limited.
“At the time of filing this report, it was gathered that one person has been confirmed dead, six people were rescued with severe injuries, while about 30, including the site manager, Alh. Ibrahim Ishaku, were still trapped as of yesterday,” he said.
“The rescuers had to run for their lives as the mine kept collapsing inside Galkogo village of Shiroro LGA yesterday, June 3, 2024.”
