Veteran journalist and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has sharply criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing what he describes as “incompetent friends” to his cabinet. Momodu claims that Tinubu’s approach to governance is flawed because he is attempting to replicate his Lagos strategy on a national scale in Abuja.
During an interview with Channels TV on Monday, July 22, Momodu expressed his concerns about the current economic crisis and the effectiveness of Tinubu’s appointees. He remarked, “It is difficult to name 10 out of Tinubu’s ministers or appointees alongside their accomplishments.”
Highlighting the achievements of Nigerians abroad, Momodu questioned why such talent is not being utilized domestically. “I have travelled to Australia. There is nowhere you would not meet Nigerians doing great things. Where are those people? In Nigeria today it is either you are the son of, the daughter of… Nigeria cannot continue to operate on basis of compensation. ‘I must compensate my friend, my former schoolmate’,” he said.
Momodu further criticized the dependency of Tinubu’s cabinet members on the President, suggesting they are unable to provide honest feedback. “A lot of the people in his cabinet now, their lives totally depend on Tinubu. They can’t tell him the truth. I know what a lot of them say behind when they see us.”
He concluded by emphasizing the need for a more competent and accomplished cabinet, arguing that the current team lacks the necessary credentials and experience. “I’m someone who believes in a star-studded cabinet. Today, if you ask me to name 10 ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet and tell you what they did or did not do before they were appointed, I will struggle. That is the truth.”
