Kano State Governor Vows to Crack Down on LGBTQ+ Advocacy
Governor Abba Yusuf

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has declared that his administration will not tolerate any groups suspected of promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) rights in the state. This announcement follows increasing tensions over activities allegedly supporting same-sex marriage in Kano.

State Commissioner for Information Baba Dantiye communicated the governor’s directive to the press on Sunday, addressing concerns about an alleged agreement by the Federal Government regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

Dantiye emphasized that any agreement promoting LGBTQ+ activities contradicts the norms and values of Kano’s residents and breaches the state’s moral standards. He assured that the governor has instructed the Hisbah Board to take immediate action against groups advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

“I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, even though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano,” Dantiye said. “As you know, 98% of Kano’s population are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it.”

The commissioner revealed that the government has received numerous concerns from citizens about groups allegedly promoting LGBTQ+ activities. In response, the governor has mandated Hisbah to investigate and take necessary actions.

“We also discussed this with the governor, and he directed Hisbah to investigate and crack down on them. We will take legal action as appropriate,” Dantiye added.
