Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have taken over Ramat Park in Benin, celebrating even though the official results of the Edo Governorship Election have yet to be announced.
As of the time of this report, the collation of election results had not yet commenced. However, that did not stop the jubilant mood at Ramat Park, where supporters from both major parties chanted victory songs, each side claiming triumph in the polls.
The off-cycle election, held on Saturday, featured 17 candidates vying for the governor’s seat, with the APC and PDP being the dominant forces. The large crowd of supporters, facing each other, created a tense atmosphere, as security forces, including the police and military, worked tirelessly to maintain peace and prevent any clashes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ramat Park, where the celebration is taking place, is about 700 meters from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin, where the collation of results will take place.
APC supporters gathered at the center of the park, setting up electronic gadgets and dancing to music blaring from speakers. Both sides continue to express confidence in their party’s victory as the state awaits the official declaration of results.
Edo residents cast their votes on Saturday to elect a new governor, who will oversee the state’s affairs for the next four years.
