The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North/Aba South Constituency in Abia State, following accusations of assaulting a Bolt driver and issuing a threat to “make him disappear.” Ikwechegh, a first-time lawmaker from the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), was seen in a viral video purportedly slapping the driver multiple times during an altercation at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The confrontation reportedly occurred on October 27 when driver Stephen Abuwatseya arrived to deliver an order to Ikwechegh. In the footage, Ikwechegh allegedly tells a woman on the phone that he has the power to make the driver “disappear” within Nigeria without consequence. He is further heard asserting that he would refuse to pay for the order, citing “disrespect” from the driver as the reason for his actions.

The Maitama Divisional Police headquarters confirmed receiving a complaint from Abuwatseya regarding the alleged assault. The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed Ikwechegh’s arrest and stated that the lawmaker had been taken into custody for questioning. “Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North/Aba South in the House of Representatives, was invited for questioning over the case. Preliminary investigations reveal a dispute arose over delivery methods, leading to the reported altercation,” she said.

The FCT Police Command further noted that Ikwechegh allegedly dismissed the office of the Inspector General of Police, telling the victim to “go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police” after the incident.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to a fair and impartial inquiry. “The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s attitude toward law enforcement and assures that justice will be served. Appropriate legal action will be taken once investigations conclude,” Adeh added.
