Dangote Group Denies IPMAN’s Allegations, Fuel Price Concerns Persist Among Nigerians

Dangote Refinery Dismisses Claims of Selling Petrol Above ₦1,000 Per Litre, Labels Reports as “Fake News”

Dangote Refinery has refuted recent claims suggesting it is selling petrol at rates between ₦1,015 and ₦1,028 per litre, calling the reports “fake news” in a statement released on Saturday, November 2. The clarification follows assertions from some oil marketers, who alleged that the refinery’s petrol pricing far exceeds the cost of imported fuel.

The allegations originated on Friday when representatives from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) suggested that buying from Dangote’s refinery might be less economical than importation. IPMAN’s National Assistant Secretary, Yakubu Suleiman, explained that the current landing cost for imported petrol is approximately ₦978.01 per litre, which he claimed was lower than Dangote’s reported rates.

“We have to go where the price is lower and where we can make a profit. We must also consider the impact on Nigerians,” Suleiman stated during an interview on Arise Television. IPMAN’s comments underscore the industry’s concern over rising fuel costs and the potential financial burden on consumers.

In response, Dangote Group used its official X (formerly Twitter) account to categorically deny the claims, stating, “The report of us selling petrol at over ₦1,000 per litre is completely false and misleading.” Despite the denial, the company did not disclose specific details regarding its pricing or the factors that may influence any potential price adjustments.

The exchange has intensified public concern over fuel prices in Nigeria, with citizens worried about further hikes amid high inflation and escalating energy costs. Many consumers are voicing fears that rising petrol prices could worsen the strain on household budgets, particularly as other basic living expenses continue to climb.
