The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on the Marine Bridge to facilitate repair works by the Federal Ministry of Works. The repairs, which involve the rehabilitation of the bridge’s asphalt pavement, will commence on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, and are expected to be completed by Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development on Sunday, urging road users to remain patient during the rehabilitation period and adhere to the provided alternative routes.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To minimize disruptions, the Lagos State Government outlined alternative routes for motorists traveling to and from Apapa, Lagos Island, and Iddo:
From Apapa to Lagos Island
- Route 1: Motorists can pass through Costain Roundabout, link Eko Bridge, and proceed to Lagos Island.
- Route 2: From Apapa, drivers may access Ijora 7Up via Marine Bridge, take the ramp to Ijora Causeway Access Road through Ijora Oloye, and connect to Eko Bridge to continue to Lagos Island.
From Apapa to Ijora Causeway/Iddo
- Route 1: Drivers are advised to pass through Costain Roundabout, access Eko Bridge, and connect to Ijora Causeway before taking the ramp via the U-turn to link Iddo.
- Route 2: Motorists can link Ijora 7Up via Marine Bridge, access Ijora Causeway through Ijora Oloye, and connect to Iddo.
Importantly, Osiyemi noted that traffic inbound Apapa from Costain Roundabout will not be affected and will remain uninterrupted throughout the repair period.
Government’s Appeal for Patience
Speaking on the diversion, Osiyemi emphasized that the traffic management plan was designed to ensure minimal inconvenience during the rehabilitation process.
“Motorists are implored to be patient, as this measure aims to ensure smooth operations during the repair works,” he said, adding that the collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works underscores efforts to maintain Lagos’ critical infrastructure.
Public Awareness
Road users are encouraged to plan their trips accordingly, follow traffic management directives, and make use of the alternative routes provided to avoid delays. The Lagos State Government also urged commuters to remain cooperative during this period to ensure seamless execution of the repair project.
The Marine Bridge serves as a vital link for both commuters and businesses, connecting major parts of Lagos. Its rehabilitation is expected to enhance road safety and improve travel experience upon completion.
