The Nigerian Army, in a coordinated effort with other security agencies, has intensified operations to combat economic sabotage in the Niger Delta, dismantling illegal oil refining networks and recovering substantial quantities of stolen crude oil and petroleum products.
During a week-long operation from November 25 to December 1, 2024, troops successfully dismantled 56 illegal oil bunkering sites and seized 88 cooking drums. The operation also led to the recovery of 1.2 million litres of stolen crude oil and large amounts of illegally refined products.
Highlights of the Operation
- Yenagoa LGA’s Okordia Forest: Troops deactivated 15 illegal refining sites, recovering 755,000 litres of stolen crude and 53,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
- Biseni Forest: Discovery of 12 illegal refining sites yielded 34,000 litres of stolen crude and 5,500 litres of refined AGO.
- Kula I, Akuku-Toru LGA: An illegal pipeline connection was dismantled, with over 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil recovered from a tarpaulin reservoir.
- Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA: A truck carrying 35,000 litres of crude oil concealed with sawdust was intercepted.
- Degema LGA: Eight refining sites containing 27,000 litres of crude oil were shut down in Bakana and Buguma areas.
- Imo River: Troops confiscated 88 cooking drums and 26 metal containers holding 42,500 litres of crude oil.
- Ugo Community, Orhionwon LGA, Edo State: A storage site containing 40,000 litres of crude oil in sacks was uncovered.
- Warri South LGA: An active refining site was dismantled, and 2,000 litres of refined AGO were recovered.
- Enwang Bridge, Mbo LGA: Drums containing 5,580 litres of petroleum motor spirit (PMS) meant for smuggling were seized.
Arrests and Seizures
Seventeen suspects were apprehended during the operations. Security forces also confiscated seven vehicles, five motorcycles, boats, pumping machines, and other tools used in illegal refining activities.
Military Leadership Commends Troops
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, praised the troops for their achievements. He reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to safeguarding national assets, curbing oil theft, and maintaining security in the Niger Delta.
