The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered that no police officer should carry assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti). He also warned officers against any actions that violate human rights, stressing that such misconduct will attract severe consequences.
Egbetokun made this clear during a virtual meeting with senior police officers on Monday. The IGP emphasized the importance of maintaining professional conduct and operational integrity across the Nigeria Police Force.
A statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi highlighted key directives from the meeting. “The IGP addressed several pressing issues aimed at enhancing the ethical and professional standards of police personnel nationwide,” Adejobi said.
The IGP expressed concerns over rising complaints of human rights violations reported through police complaint channels. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and warned tactical squads against misuse of power.
“All tactical squads must adhere to standard operating procedures and wear approved uniforms,” Egbetokun stated. “No operative should be seen carrying assault arms while dressed in mufti.”
In addition, the IGP condemned the practice of transferring cases without his written approval. He explained that such actions cause delays in the justice process and create unnecessary burdens for those involved.
Egbetokun concluded by urging all officers to work together to prevent any acts of misconduct that could damage the reputation of the police force. He stressed that full compliance with these directives would be enforced to improve public trust and ensure accountability within the Force.
