Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are pushing him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The denial was issued on Saturday in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, who described the reports as “another lie from idle minds who have nothing to contribute to the development of the country.”
Olayinka described the viral report — which originated from an online platform — as a baseless attempt to drag the FCT Minister into “needless political drama.”
“Wike does not function in hiding. He does what he says and says what he does,” the statement read.
“The minister has made it clear where he stands as far as the 2027 presidential election is concerned — he is with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Olayinka reiterated Wike’s loyalty to Tinubu, declaring that “as far as Wike is concerned, it is Tinubu till 2031.”
He also clarified that the only political meeting Wike attended was with PDP stakeholders from the southern region, held on August 20, 2025, to deliberate on internal party zoning matters ahead of a planned Lagos summit.
“That meeting had nothing to do with the 2027 presidency,” he said, listing the names of several PDP leaders from the South-East and South-South who co-signed a statement following the gathering.
Olayinka alleged that those spreading the presidential rumour were bent on undermining Wike’s credibility and distracting him from his ongoing developmental work in the FCT.
“We know their intentions, but the person and character of the FCT Minister is known to Nigerians. He doesn’t do anything in secret.”
He concluded by reaffirming that Wike remains focused on implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda in the capital city and delivering the infrastructural vision of the Tinubu-led administration.
“To ensure the success of the President’s re-election, Wike will continue to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT, building a capital city that can compete globally,” Olayinka added.
