Wike Makes Moves to Demolish Over 6,000 Buildings in 30 Areas In FCT
Nyesom Wike

ABUJA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has endorsed the demolition of structures in Garki, Jabi, and 28 other areas previously assessed by the Federal Capital Development Authority. The proposed action, aimed at eliminating illegal constructions, will affect around 6,000 buildings across the territory.

This latest move is part of a broader strategy to restore the original master plan of the FCT. Earlier this week, immediately after his inauguration as Minister, Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, reaffirmed his commitment to this cause. He expressed concern about the extent to which the initial blueprint of the territory has been distorted by unauthorized buildings, particularly in the green zones of Abuja.

Commenting on his observations during a nocturnal survey of the FCT, Wike stated, “The master plan of the territory has been marred by illegal structures in green areas of Abuja. They will be demolished. We will reclaim our land and allocate it to dedicated developers with strict timelines for development.”

The Federal Government may raze at least 6,000 illicit structures in the following verified locations:

Apo Mechanic Village
Byanzhin
Dawaki
Dei Dei
Durumi
Dutse
Garki
Garki Village
Gishiri
Gwagwalada

Muktar Galadima, the Director of the FCTA Department of Development Control, highlighted the need for an updated assessment. “The previous survey was executed in February 2022. Our department will conduct a new comprehensive survey soon,” he confirmed.

This declaration has stoked anxieties amongst the inhabitants of the earmarked areas, igniting discussions about displacement, resettlement, and the broader implications for Abuja’s urban development narrative.
