In a bid to ensure public safety and maintain peace during the upcoming Yuletide celebrations, the Ogun State Police Command has officially prohibited the use of fireworks and explosives in the state.
The ban was announced by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Omolola Odutola, in a statement released on Monday.
The decision to ban fireworks and explosives came in response to numerous complaints from residents who expressed concerns about the indiscriminate use of these items, which often create confusion by mimicking the sound of gunshots.
According to Odutola, these complaints have been steadily pouring in since November 1, with areas such as Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne, and Sango Ota being particularly affected.
“The state police command has been inundated with report indices coming from residents since Nov. 1, especially in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne, and Sango Ota, over the indiscriminate use of dangerous fireworks popularly called “Banga,” the police PPRO said.
“They said that the deafening sound of it threatens the state of peace of mind and triggering anxiety of residents, especially amid security concerns. “The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has henceforth declared a ban on indiscriminate use of explosive fireworks in Ogun State due to residents and the community’s inability to differentiate between gunshots and genuine fireworks,” she added.
The ban serves as a stern warning to individuals, especially young people, who may contemplate flouting this directive. Violators of the ban will face appropriate legal consequences in accordance with existing laws. The Ogun State Police Command urges all residents to respect the privacy and well-being of their fellow citizens during the Yuletide season and to enjoy the celebrations responsibly.
