In a recent development, the management of Bayero University in Kano State, Nigeria, has announced the suspension of all academic activities, including the ongoing undergraduate first-semester exams for the 2022–2023 academic session.
This decision, which comes into effect immediately, has been attributed to the university’s union’s participation in the nationwide strike.
Mrs. Amina Abdullahi, the acting registrar of the institution, issued a statement on Tuesday, officially conveying the university’s stance on the matter. According to the statement, the university’s management deemed it necessary to suspend ongoing academic activities in light of the decision made by university unions to join the ongoing strike initiated by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The statement released by the university management reads, “Following the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the subsequent decision by the University Unions to join the strike, the Management of Bayero University, Kano, has decided to suspend the ongoing 2022/2023 First Semester Undergraduate examinations and all other academic activities until further notice.”
While this suspension has undoubtedly disrupted the academic calendar, the university has urged its students to remain calm and await further directives from the management.
The ongoing undergraduate first-semester examinations had reached the halfway mark when the decision to suspend them was taken. The university bulletin assured students that these examinations would resume promptly once the nationwide strike comes to an end.
The nationwide strike, initiated by the NLC and TUC, has caused widespread disruption in various sectors, including education, transportation, and healthcare, as workers demand improved conditions and a fairer wage structure.
As negotiations continue between the government and labor unions, students and stakeholders in the education sector anxiously await the resolution of the strike, hoping for a swift return to normalcy in their academic pursuits.
