Former Sweden head coach, Janne Andersson, has revealed the reason behind his decision to turn down the opportunity to manage Nigeria’s Super Eagles. The 62-year-old was among the top candidates linked to the vacant Super Eagles coaching role earlier this year, but he ultimately declined the offer.
In a recent interview with Swedish newspaper Hallandsposten, Andersson explained that while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made several attempts to secure his services, he felt the terms of the contract were not ideal.
“Nigeria was very persistent and wanted me to take the job. There were many appealing aspects, but the overall situation wasn’t perfect. It didn’t feel 100 percent right, and it has to feel that way for me to fully commit,” Andersson shared.
Despite being seen as the frontrunner for the position, the former Sweden boss emphasized the importance of being selective about his next career move. He noted that he is currently focused on other responsibilities, including mentorship and board roles, and is cautious about taking on a new coaching assignment.
“It would take a lot for me to take on a new coaching job. I am selective and have other things going on, like mentorship and board roles,” he added.
Andersson, who enjoyed a successful stint with the Swedish national team, guiding them to the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals, remains without a coaching role since parting ways with the Swedish Football Association earlier this year. The Super Eagles coaching position remains vacant as the NFF continues its search for a new head coach.
