The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has postponed the hearing of the privacy breach case filed by Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, against Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho. The case, marked as suit No. M/1006/2024, has been adjourned to January 14, 2025.

Adams is seeking N5 billion in damages, alleging that Igboho’s actions invaded his privacy and tarnished his reputation as the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland. The case centers around a publication that Adams claims severely affected his standing and fundamental rights.

During Monday’s session, Igboho’s defence counsel, Junaid Sanusi, accompanied by Olalekan Banjo, informed Justice A.O. Lajide that they had not received any official court notice and only became aware of the matter through media reports. Sanusi explained, “We appeared for the respondent, Adeyemo, who was sued by Gani Adams over an alleged breach of his right to privacy. We informed the court that we only got the information from the news media. We are ready to receive the service of the documents on behalf of the respondent, as instructed by him.”

R.O. Solahudeen, representing Adams’ counsel Kehinde Adegbite, confirmed that all relevant documents would be served to Igboho through the court bailiff. In response, Justice Lajide directed the claimant’s counsel to ensure all necessary paperwork is properly served before the next hearing date and set January 14, 2025, as the new date for further proceedings.

Sanusi reiterated after the hearing that the case would proceed based on filed affidavits, noting, “It’s an affidavit-based application, so it is not a matter requiring oral testimony. Both parties do not have to be present in court; only the lawyers will attend to argue the application.”
