The Nigerian Army has neutralized a notorious terrorist commander, Munzur Ya Audu, during operations in Yobe State, according to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Buba highlighted the military’s intensified efforts to dismantle terrorist logistics bases and destroy networks affiliated with terror groups across the country.
Recovery of Arms and Ammunition
During the operation that led to Ya Audu’s death, troops recovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition. The haul included:
- 145 assorted weapons, such as 68 AK-47 rifles, two PKT guns, two AK-56 rifles, one GPMG, and 24 fabricated rifles.
- Explosive devices, including one RPG bomb, three explosives, and five hand grenades (one standard and four fabricated).
- 3,825 rounds of ammunition, comprising 2,093 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 246 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammo, and 317 rounds of 7.62mm GPMG/PKM ammo.
Other recovered items included locally made pistols, pump-action guns, Dane guns, live cartridges, and empty cases of machine gun ammunition.
Targeting Terrorist Infrastructure
Major General Buba emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to crippling the operational capabilities of terrorist groups through sustained assaults on their logistics bases and support networks.
“These efforts are critical in dismantling the structures and supply chains that enable terror groups to operate,” he said.
Renewed Military Commitment
The successful operation is part of a broader military strategy to eliminate the threat of terrorism in Nigeria. Security experts have commended the military’s continued successes but urged sustained vigilance to prevent regrouping by terror factions.
The Nigerian Army’s focus on disrupting logistics and recovering illegal arms is seen as a significant step toward restoring peace and stability, particularly in conflict-prone regions like Yobe State.
