Yobe State Governor Approves N70,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants
Mai Mala Buni

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has approved the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage to state civil servants, with implementation set to begin in December 2024.

This approval follows the recommendations of the committee on minimum wage, which was established to facilitate the transition to the new salary structure across the state.

Transition for Local Government Workers
Comrade Mohammed Mamman, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, disclosed the development in a statement, highlighting efforts to reconcile local government finances for seamless adoption of the new wage.

“The committee had recommended a reconciliation of local government finances to ensure a hitch-free transition process of the local government councils from the existing salary structure to the new minimum wage,” Mamman said.

He added that the reconciliation process is nearing completion and would be concluded soon to enable local government employees to be enrolled into the new salary structure without delay.

Call for Dedication to Service
Governor Buni urged civil servants in the state to reciprocate the government’s gesture by enhancing their commitment to effective and efficient service delivery.

The approval aligns with the federal government’s directive on implementing the N70,000 minimum wage, a policy aimed at alleviating economic hardship for Nigerian workers.

Broader Implications
Yobe’s decision underscores growing compliance among states to align with the new wage law signed by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024. While many states have already adopted the revised salary scale, others, particularly at the local government level, are still navigating administrative and financial adjustments.
