Enugu State government has dismissed reports of an armed attack in Awgu as fake news, saying no such incident happened anywhere in the local government area or elsewhere in the state.
Malachy Agbo, the commissioner for information and communication, made the denial in an official statement on behalf of the state government. He categorically stated that the alleged attack did not occur.
The clarification comes as reports circulated on social media and in some quarters claiming violence had erupted in Awgu. The government moved quickly to counter the narrative, warning against the spread of unverified information that could cause panic among residents.
Awgu, a local government area in Enugu State, has in the past been affected by security challenges. The swift response from the state government suggests officials want to prevent misinformation from taking root and potentially triggering unnecessary fear or triggering copycat incidents.
