More upsets continue to trail the Australian Open as 15 year old Coco Gauf has defeated defending champion, Naomi Osaka.
Coco Gauff is the youngest player to defeat a top five seed at a slam since Jennifer Capriati beat Gabriela Sabatini in the quarter-finals of the 1991 US Open.
Speaking after her victory she said:
Honestly, what is my life? Like, oh my gosh. Two years ago I lost first round in juniors and now I’m here. This is crazy!
I mean, I love it down here. Oh my gosh. Like, honestly? Thank you guys so much for the bottom of my heart. Like, oh my gosh, I’m on Rod Laver Arena. I can’t believe this!
The two players had met in the third round of the US Open last September, in which Osaka prevailed and also had to play the nanny, consoling the younger player. Gauff had made the fourth round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam last year.
