Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has signed a record deal with international record label Virgin EMI Records, owned by Universal Music Group.
The news was announced yesterday by the musician on his Instagram page, with pictures of him and the company’s chairman, Ted Cockle.
It’s a thing of joy to see more Nigerian music artists getting the international recognition that they deserve and we can only hope to see more of such signings in the future.
Timi Dakolo is the winner of the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007 and was born in Accra, Ghana to a Nigerian father (a Bayelsa native) and a Ghanaian mother.
He started singing in his church at the tender age of 12 and joined the group Purple Love as a founding member. They dominated the music scene in Port Harcourt before disbanding in 2005.
