Nigerians and other foreigners have been given12 hours to vacate Keimoes and Upington areas of Northern Cape in South Africa.
This announcement was made after the violent clash between locals and foreigners which led to the killing of a police officer and his cousin on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.
According to reports, a Nigerian had stabbed the Constable Nico Visagie and his cousin to death and infuriating locals who attacked foreigners and set their houses and stalls on fire.
The report went to the community members of Keimoes and environs, which led to rampage burning and destroying properties belonging to foreign nationals and Nigerians in particular.
Nigerians and other foreign nationals have been expelled from Upington.
The morning chaos was brought to a calm due to the intervention of police officers as they arrested some locals for public disturbance and malicious damage to properties but the situation is still tense.
President of the Nigerian Union of South Africa, Mr. Adetola Olubajo said “They have appeared in Keimoes Magistrate Court for a bail hearing” and the suspect, who had been on the run since the incident, has been arrested and will appear in court on or before next Monday.
He also commended the South African Police Service for their swift intervention and called for more protection from Nigerians and other nationals in the Northern Cape.
