The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday announced that it had deregistered 74 political parties from participating in subsequent elections in the country.
Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja,
He said the parties failed to meet constitutional requirements that determine the continuous existence of political parties in the country.
The INEC chairman said the number of Nigeria’s political parties are now 18.
The successful parties are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance and Allied Peoples Movement.
Others are Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party.
