In what has been a stunning turn of events, China has reported no new local cases of the coronavirus as the rest of the world continues to experience an increase in the infection rate.
In the past few weeks, the rate of infection in China has slowed down while other nations continue to battle the epidemic by stepping up safety measures.
The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday hailed China’s success in curbing the outbreak in the city of Wuhan where the virus first emerged last year.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference in Geneva:
“Wuhan provides hope for the rest of the world that even the most severe situation can be turned around.”
56 million people in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei province were locked down in January but authorities are now easing the travel restrictions as the cases of COVID-19 have dwindled.
Nonetheless, China has not relented in stepping up its tackling infection cases brought in from other countries (41 cases were reported on Saturday).
A total of 269 cases have now been brought to China, with Beijing and other regions being forced to make international arrivals go into a 14-day quarantine. The civil aviation also revealed that it would limit passenger numbers on inbound international flights.
