The entertainment industry continues to suffer as the US box office has recorded zero earnings for the first time ever due to the nation’s shutdown of nearly all of its cinemas due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus.
According to The Guardian, Data Agency, Comscore failed to release its weekly report after the film industry’s main distributors (led by Disney) declined to issue any figures.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, revealed that the only comparable occasion to the present circumstance was after the Northbridge earthquake in 1994 as it had prevented data collection.
As big companies like AMC and Regal had been closed last week, the adverse effect on the cinema income is more severe than the previous historical occurrence.
Despite the ongoing revenue loss, some movies are making money. Box Office Mojo has revealed that the comedy film Phoenix, Oregon has earned $3,842 from 17 screens. But this is as a result of a streaming partnership with individual cinemas in which audiences can watch the movie at home.
According to Deadline, Disney/Pixar animation Onward is currently playing at 135 venues and has made $71,000. The Invisible Man has fetched $64,000 from 11 locations.
