The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world has surpassed 5 million just five months after the virus first emerged.

The disease, which emerged in China in late 2019, is known to have caused nearly 325,000 deaths to date.
Measures including extensive controls on populations in China mean the country now only has the 13th highest number of total recorded cases to date with just under 83,000 cases and 4,634 deaths.
Nearly 2 million people have recovered from the disease. The United States have so far recorded the highest number of cases with 1,573,042 followed by Russia (3108, 705) and Spain (278, 803).
